The Home Baking Trends That Make It Look Easy

Social media and time-saving hacks are inspiring a new generation of bakers
In The Grocer’s latest feature on home baking trends, social media is changing how people bake at home. In fact, it’s driving real growth. As a result, the category is now worth £1.1bn, up 6.7% year on year.
Rozz Algar, Global Services Director at HRA Global, shared insight on the rise of “assembly baking”. In short, this is where shoppers pair a shop-bought base with a homemade finish. So baking is becoming more about creativity than technical skill. Meanwhile, social media keeps lowering the barriers to a good result.
What’s fuelling these home baking trends?
The best trends move fast. Take the viral “Japanese cheesecake” hack. When it took off, UK Biscoff biscuit sales jumped 10.9% in value in a single week. Volumes rose 30.2%. Supermarket cake hacks and single-serve “dot cakes” have followed the same path on TikTok and Instagram.
Flavour is getting more adventurous too. Rozz points to growing interest in Middle Eastern ingredients. Pistachio and tahini are leading the way, helped by trends like Dubai chocolate.
Health is also shaping the category. Shoppers are adding dried fruit and plain yoghurt to their bakes. Both boost fibre and protein at home. It’s a simple way to make a treat feel a little better.
How brands are responding
Some brands have already spotted the shift. Jus-Rol has created simple recipes that lean on assembly rather than skill. Dr Oetker added an Easy Melt cake covering to make decoration quicker. Both play to the same need: convenience, without losing the fun.
The commercial lesson is clear. These trends start online, then move quickly onto shelves. Brands that spot them early can turn a viral moment into real sales.
So the opportunity is straightforward. Make baking easier, more creative and more accessible. Time-poor shoppers want impressive results with less effort. Products that slot into an assembly bake are well placed to grow. Think ready-made icings, decorations and flavour kits.
