Is This The World’s Healthiest Diet?

Improving Memory A recent study published in the open-access journal Frontiers to Nutrition details how the Mediterranean diet had been found, through a study spanning 2000-2015, to positively impact cognitive processes. Out of attention, language and memory (all three of which were found to improve), memory improved the most.

Type 2 Diabetes

Perhaps due to the heavy emphasis on fresh, non-processed and low-sugar foods, the Mediterranean diet has been found not just to prevent, but to even reverse type 2 diabetes. Many studies have concluded in favour of the diet, with a particular research trial at Newcastle University in 2014 finding that Type-2 diabetes sufferers could find their blood sugar levels back to normal in just eight weeks.

Preventing Heart Disease & Strokes

The same emphasis on non-processed and non-refined foods has seen the Mediterranean diet consistently lower the risk of heart diseases and strokes. A recent study of over 15000 people in 39 countries published in the European Heart Journal (2016) found the diet triumphed consistently.

Increasing & Maintaining Agility

Particularly in seniors, the nutrients from Mediterranean diets are extremely beneficial in nourishing the muscles in the body, reducing the development of muscle weakness and other signs of fragility by up to 70%.

Reducing The Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease

Perhaps tied to its positive effects on cognitive function in people of all ages, the Mediterranean diet has been credited with maintaining normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, both of which are highly beneficial in reducing the risk of Alzheimers or dementia.

Halving The Risk Of Parkinson’s Disease

2011 findings published in the European Journal of Neurology supported a previous multitude of studies claiming adhering to the diet halved the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Through the high number of antioxidants in the diet, it prevents the damaging process of ‘Oxidative Stress’ on the cells of the body, a key contributory factor toward Parkinson’s disease.
